On Saturday, March 23rd 2013, Innisfree Hotels will turn off the lights for one hour in six Gulf Coast hotels for the company’s 2nd annual celebration of Earth Hour.
Participating hotels include the Hilton Gulf Front, Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Resort on Pensacola Beach Florida, and the Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn& Suites and Holiday Inn Express in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Innisfree will encourage their guests to join hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world in the largest environmental event in history. The goal is to raise awareness about climate change by encouraging guests to turn out out their hotel room lights during Earth Hour. Each hotel will also celebrate the occasion with their guests with fun events such as candle lit dinners or cookies and milk in a candle lit lobby.
Earth Hour was started by the World Wildlife Federation in Australia in 2006 when residents of Sydney were inspired to show their support for action on climate change by turning out their lights. The following year, 2.2 million residents of Sydney and more than 2,000 businesses enjoyed an hour of darkness. In 2008, the City of Toronto in Canada joined in and the Earth Hour movement went global.
Last year hundreds of millions of people in 35 countries and more then 400 cities and towns turned out their lights; in doing so, they sent a powerful message to governments around the world that solutions to the climate change crisis must be global in scope. Earth hour demonstrates the amazing things that can be achieved when people around the globe come together for a common cause.
Earth Hour is now an annual event scheduled on the last Saturday of March; closely coinciding with the equinox to ensure most cities are in darkness as it is rolled out around the Earth.
This year WWF is harnessing the power of social media to encourage people around the globe to commit to lasting action on climate change. We encourage you to join the 700 million people who have liked Earth Hour on Facebook.
Earth hour demonstrates that everyone, from children to CEOs and politicians, has the power to change the world they live in. Innisfree Hotels is honored to join this movement and we look forward to celebrating Earth Hour with our guests.
